2023 Mazda MX-30 vs. 2023 Chevrolet Bolt: Beyond the numbers

The Mazda MX-30 is a different kind of electric vehicle that focuses primarily on handling and driving pleasure, key elements of Mazda's DNA. In addition, the MX-30 offers a high-end interior built with exclusive and refined materials that are also environmentally friendly. In short, the MX-30 aims to offer an experience behind the wheel that stands out from its competitors like the Chevrolet Bolt, whose future is uncertain by the way.

The Mazda MX-30 2023 is therefore an electric vehicle that does things differently and whose qualities go far beyond the numbers.

The range

First, let's talk about range. When Mazda designed the MX-30, its engineers focused on the real needs of consumers and discovered two interesting facts:

    • The average Canadian motorist's commute is 24 kilometers
  •
  • Charging time is just as important to electric vehicle buyers as range.

And so, they designed an electric vehicle that would have enough range to meet the daily needs of 99% of owners, but could also recharge much faster than other electric vehicles.

The result is a range of 161 kilometers for the Mazda MX-30 courtesy of a 35.5 kWh battery.

While the Chevrolet Bolt offers more overall range, the MX-30 offers enough range for our daily needs. The vast majority of the time, the Bolt's extra range will not be used by the owner and therefore offers no benefit.

On the other hand, it takes more than 10 hours to charge the Bolt's battery, whereas the MX-30 can recharge to 100% in less than 4 hours (20% to 80% in only 2 hours, 50 minutes). On a 50 kW fast charging station, it is possible to go from 20% to 80% charge in the MX-30 in just 36 minutes. In short, with its ultra-fast charging capabilities, the MX-30 allows you to continue on your way more quickly while the Bolt has to stay plugged in.

Eco-friendliness

Building electric vehicles, like gasoline vehicles, requires the use of resources. By offering a vehicle with a smaller battery, you need less ressources which in turn leads to a more eco-friendly production process and vehicle. The Mazda MX-30 is more eco-friendly than the Chevrolet Bolt simply because it has a smaller battery.

In addition, the MX-30's interior uses high-quality, environmentally friendly materials. The cork on the doors and center console gives the MX-30's interior a sleek and elegant look, while the seat fabric is designed using recycled polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles.

The drive

The Chevrolet Bolt is a fun car, but its far from engaging or sporty. The Mazda MX-30, on the other hand feels like a Mazda3 when you get behind the wheel. As a matter of fact, you will likely forget you are driving an electric vehicle after a few minutes behind the wheel of the MX-30. This was the goal of Mazda engineers who created a dynamic, fun vehicle that is perfectly suited to urban driving. Unlike many (most?) EVs, you'll have fun driving the MX-30 every day.

Finally, the Bolt has experienced several reliability problems with its battery over the past few years and recently, reports began to surface that Chevrolet will stop selling the Bolt in the near future.
